Ugly Truth: Nearly 16 Crore Women Are Jobless in India

At a time when the country is going through economic rehaul, battling inflation, a new problem arises—courtesy to 16 crore jobless women. According to the 2009-2011 Census done by the government, the total amount of women work force constituted to 25.63 percent of the total population, reports Times of India.

The “invisible work force” refers to the 16 crore women without jobs in India who are of age 15 to 59, which is the prime working age. Out of them, 45 percent or nearly half of them are confined to household chores. The data has shown that most of the women in this category are confined to their house and quite a few are not working due to social pressures or customs.

The economic policies have not been formed in favor of women, which evidently is becoming a reason as to why there is a huge number of unemployed women. This is a huge loss to a country so big that can actually benefit from a work force this large. It also is a loss to women as well.

The other reason for this overwhelming amount of unemployment is that women are less educated than men; with the literacy rate of women being around 65 percent as per the 2011 census report, whereas the literacy rate of men is over 82 percent. Unfortunately, this is an ugly truth, that 16 crore women are jobless.

This is a work force so large that is confined to a four wall life which instead could have been the source for the growth of the country’s economy and also the removal of poverty and illiteracy from the land with the largest democracy.
